Sometimes Less Is More

In previous articles, we saw that the lute is best approached as a partner—one to be engaged with inner calm and the courage to let the music flow—simply because its sound takes longer to build and behaves differently than that of a guitar.
Now, things get a bit scientific: every string instrument has a so-called “attack phase” (or transient phase) that varies significantly depending on the instrument and the plucking technique, creating complex sound patterns. Due to its construction, the lute’s attack phase is particularly distinctive:

The Impulse from the Hand
At the moment of plucking, the finger’s contact with the string creates a mechanical click—this is the transfer of energy. This is not yet a harmonic tone, but rather a percussive sound. If the player has rough calluses or uses an imprecise plucking technique, this sound is accompanied by a peculiar scraping noise. More on that later.
Decay and Pitch Drift
After the initial pluck, the free-vibrating string needs time to settle into its natural frequency. The speed at which this happens depends on the material and the tension. A steel-string acoustic guitar, for example, operates under much higher tension than a classical guitar with nylon strings. Anyone switching between the two immediately notices that steel strings respond instantly and brightly but are unforgiving of technical errors.
The lute works in exactly the opposite way: because lute strings are under very low tension (often only 2.5 to 3.5 kg per string, compared to 7–10 kg for a guitar), they initially vibrate with an unusually wide amplitude. Physically speaking, this wide displacement causes a momentary rise in pitch—a “pitch drift”—because the tension is higher at the point of maximum displacement than it is at rest:
In essence, the string audibly searches for its harmonic pitch while the note is being played.
The Neck as a Living System
To complicate matters further, the friction pegs on a historical lute are held in place solely by static friction. When a string is plucked forcefully, the impact affects the entire pegbox. The pegs and the wood yield slightly, turning the entire neck into a sort of spring mechanism; here, minute movements at the fixed end of the string may either amplify one another randomly or dampen each other out. This phenomenon significantly prolongs the time the string takes to settle into a stable, harmonic vibration pattern—something rarely seen in the guitar, with its comparatively rigid construction.
Why This Phenomenon Is Audible
The human ear requires roughly 30 to 50 milliseconds to stably identify a pitch and detect any dissonances. Anything shorter than that is perceived merely as a “click” or a “pop.”
While a guitar often produces a clear overtone spectrum after just 10–20 milliseconds, the lute’s system—comprising peg, neck, and soft string—struggles to establish its final sound for up to 50 milliseconds. It is during this phase that the tone’s character is determined; consequently, a guitar will almost always sound the same given an identical pluck, whereas the lute has the audacity to decide anew, each time, exactly how it wants to sound.
This unpredictable, independent behavior turns the playing of fretted chords on the lute into a game of chance, as each string constantly reinvents its own timbre in real time.
The Art of Reduction: Must All Strings Be Used? Let’s be honest: with so many strings and a multitude of possible chords featuring rich bass strings, the temptation to pack the fretboard with chords—much like on a guitar—in search of a full sound is strong. Yet, that approach simply won’t work:
A solo piece for Baroque lute often gains depth when we move away from the concept of the full chord.
Partial chords and *style brisé*—a practical example:
Instead of playing a block-like G major chord, only the third is played against the bass note.
By plucking the strings in a staggered (broken) fashion, each note is given sufficient time for its initial 50-millisecond “onset phase,” while we rely on a psychological phenomenon: the human brain loves order and simply fills in the missing notes—especially when a harmonic embellishment or triplet is used.
In short, when it comes to the lute, skillful playing creates an acoustic illusion that is far more elegant than “burdening” the instrument with full chords, even if executed with technical perfection. The lute’s strength lies in its mid-range resonance; a massive chord played on the low bass courses stifles these delicate overtones. Fretting fewer strings gives the instrument more room to breathe.
The magic of open drone strings
Why does a single, open-sounding drone string often achieve more than an intricately fretted chord?
To understand this, one must bear in mind that…
A drone is not merely a mundane accompanying tone, but rather a state that defines the space in which the melody can move. A cleanly executed drone is a more or less continuous tone that lies beneath any given harmonic melody. How a drone manifests itself depends heavily on how it is employed; there are, in principle, two fundamentally different approaches.
Passively utilized sympathetic resonance:
The drones of the Baroque lute serve purposes beyond just the lowest note. When you play a melody on the upper courses, the open bass strings (drones) vibrate sympathetically—even if they are not explicitly audible—thereby influencing the strings in the mid-range. The overall timbre changes and becomes richer, and this sympathetic vibration has a positive effect on general tonal stability, as the slowly vibrating bass strings favorably influence the resonant vibrations of the overtones.
Actively plucked as a basis for effects:
A single plucked bass note provides a stable foundation that sustains for several seconds. It feeds the instrument’s body a fundamental frequency so clean that it supports the melody without clashing with the transient dissonance associated with fretted chords (described above). Additionally, the deep drone strings exert a powerful vibrational influence: harmonically related strings and notes reach their target resonance more quickly because the drone string stimulates them to vibrate sympathetically. This allows for a faster playing style without triggering a dissonant buildup of sound.
The 5 golden rules of playing:
1. The 50-millisecond patience
Accept that the lute is not an “instant instrument.” Since the system comprising the peg, neck, and soft string needs time to settle, you should give the notes space to find themselves. Those who rush hear only mechanical clicking; those who wait with sensitivity hear the tone.
2. *Style Brisé* as the standard, not the exception
Break free from the compulsion to play block chords. Plucking the strings in succession is not a technical shortcoming but a physical necessity. It grants each string its own 50-millisecond window and allows the listener’s brain to elegantly complete the harmony on its own.
3. Trust in the drone strings
Actively use the drone strings as an anchor. A cleanly plucked bass note is not merely a low pitch but an energetic signal that guides the melody strings in the treble and steers them more quickly toward their target resonance. A lute’s bass notes do not need to deliver a heavy thud; instead, they stabilize the entire vibrational structure.
4. Dare to leave acoustic space
Do not “burden” the lute with massive fingerboard chords. The lute’s true richness lies in its mid-range and overtones. The fewer strings you actively finger, the more room the body has to breathe. Simplifying your left-hand technique often results in greater sonic depth within the room.
5. Playing with pitch drift
The lute is a living system that reacts sensitively to temperature, humidity, and the force of your touch. It will sound slightly different every time. Do not try to suppress this variation; instead, learn to play with the drift. The lute is not a computer—it is a partner with a mind of its own.
