The Path of the Heart

Well, just assume the circle of fire was real.

The embers were red-hot, the stones ancient, and the law of the forest demanded blood.

The White Wolf had chosen this young bard as her tribute. Yet, the moment she stepped across the edge of the circle beneath the silver glow of the moon and stars, standing before the eyes of the Eternals, something entirely incomprehensible took hold of her: an overwhelming, profound sense of inner peace.

It was neither the right time nor the right place.

She stood mere paces from the Heartstone of the woods—a relic now quietly stirring to life, awakened by the resonance of a lute that Fian had played with naive, unreserved devotion. Disarmed and bewildered by this sudden stillness, the predator drew back into the dark. She took his scent deep into her lungs, intent on hunting him down later when the world resumed its proper balance.

Not long after, she was sitting in the smoky haze of a roadside tavern over a mug of mead, her watchful gaze fixed on the heavy oak door.

The latch lifted, and in walked that very same young bard.

Fian shook the evening rain from his cloak, stepped toward the hearth fire, and began to sing. He sang of the White Queen of the North. He sang of her majesty, the deadly grace of her stride, and a terrifying beauty that could pierce right through the coldest winter. There was no mockery in his verses, no boastful exaggeration, and not a trace of fear—only a raw, breathtaking sincerity that caught her completely off guard. Sitting in the shadows, she felt an impulse so absurd she could barely comprehend it: she almost wanted to stand up and apologize.

The following morning marked the beginning of their journey together.

It was the quest of two absolute masters of communication: she, shaped by ancient forest laws, silent oaths, and subtle predators’ cues; he, drowning every thought in a thousand poetic words while remaining utterly blind to the obvious. Both driven by a pure, honest desire to simply do the right thing—and both uniquely gifted at talking completely past one another with absolute conviction.

And so, the chronicle began…
